Engaging children in the pleasure and power of words and language

As a child I was read to by my Mother.  Nursery rhymes and classic poems inspired me with their imagery, rhythms and humour. I was asked about their meaning and encouraged to write my own verses.
Although my Mother was not a poet or writer she managed to engage me in poetry because she understood the power of the 'spoken word'.  She used rhythm and words from literature to teach me how to interpret the world.

Very young children enjoy spoken word, storytelling and activities with actions and chanting.  This is how they remember the magic and fun of words.  My workshops take children from simple conversational speech rhythms into more complex patterns, thereby allowing them to think consciously about what they are hearing, saying and writing, and enabling them to recognise it as poetry.

Children are naturally creative and feel proud of simple verses they create, especially when helped to build on them.  A simple sentence can be taken in many artistic directions as a childs mind has no limitations
